Named after a village in South Sligo, the first reel was written by the fiddle player and composer Larry Redican, whose family were from Boyle, Co. Roscommon – Larry emigrated to New York, where he became part of an all-star fiddle section (with Andy McGann and Paddy Reynolds) in the New York Céilí Band. The second reel was written by Brendan McGlinchey on his departure from London in the 1970s. The third reel was written by Father P. J. Kelly and was named after the pier on the River Shannon near his hometown, Woodford, in East Galway. We have Chris to thank for suggesting this tune and the idea of transposing a classic, as was popular in the Leeds Irish music scene when he was growing up.

Fiddle player Caitlin Finley played for us back in the day at the Coatesville Traditional Irish Music Series. It took a while to find out she’d made a CD with flute & piano (also piccolo, pipes & melodeon) accompaniment but it was worth the wait! Check it out. Will Woodson & Chris Stevens are standouts, too. It’s nice to find a contemporary Irish CD I like start to finish. Frank Dalton
